Recover abandoned Shopify checkouts on WhatsApp, opt-in only

A WhatsApp reminder goes out only to a shopper with a recorded marketing opt-in, links straight to the real Shopify checkout URL, stops the moment an order completes, and never exceeds the frequency cap for that customer.

  1. A shopfront linked to a WhatsApp chat on a phoneDiscover
  2. A shopping cart becoming a confirmed WhatsApp messageConvert
  3. An order receipt with a confirmed paymentOrder
  4. A parcel on a conveyor with delivery tracking updatesFulfil
  5. A support headset answering a customer’s questionSupport
  6. A calendar with a follow-up message inviting the customer backRetain
  7. A rating card collecting customer feedbackFeedback

What breaks with untargeted abandonment messages

Messaging every abandoned checkout regardless of consent or timing wastes spend, annoys shoppers who already bought, and risks the WhatsApp channel itself.

  • A recovery message goes out to a shopper who never opted in to WhatsApp marketing
  • A reminder still sends after the shopper already completed the order through another channel
  • The same shopper gets reminded for every abandoned cart in the same week, with no cap
  • A recovery link points somewhere other than the real Shopify checkout, so the cart doesn't actually restore
  • A message lands at 3am the shopper's time because nothing accounts for their local quiet hours

What the abandonment record holds

One record per eligible checkout, built only from Shopify's abandonment data and a recorded opt-in.

Opt-in status
Whether this customer has a recorded WhatsApp marketing opt-in — required before any recovery message is even queued.
Abandonment stage
Browse, cart, or checkout abandonment, from Shopify's abandonment resource and cart/checkout webhooks.
Recovery link
The Shopify checkout URL for that abandoned checkout — never a card-data form inside WhatsApp.
Completion check
Whether a later order exists for this customer, checked before every send and suppressing the message once it does.
Send count
How many recovery messages this customer has already received, enforced against the frequency cap.
Inactivity delay
The configured wait after abandonment before a message is eligible to send at all.
Quiet-hours window
The local send window a workspace configures — an otherwise-eligible message waits for it to open rather than sending overnight.
Recovery attribution
Whether the shopper opened the recovery link, and whether a completed order followed within the attribution window — recorded against that specific message.

What happens between an abandoned checkout and a message

The same eligibility checks run before any recovery message is queued.

  1. Shopify reports the abandonment

A cart, checkout, or browse-abandonment signal arrives from Shopify's abandonment resource and webhooks.

  2. Opt-in is checked first

Only a shopper with a recorded WhatsApp marketing opt-in is eligible; everyone else is skipped.

  3. The inactivity delay is respected

The message waits for the configured window before it's eligible to send.

  4. Quiet hours are respected

A message that clears every other check still waits if it would land outside the workspace's configured send window.

  5. Completion is checked again

If an order completed in the meantime, the message is suppressed rather than sent.

  6. The frequency cap is checked

A customer who already received their capped number of recovery messages doesn't get another.

  7. The message sends with the real checkout link

The recovery message links straight to the Shopify checkout URL so the cart is actually there to complete.

What an opted-in shopper sees

One reminder, sent only after consent, delay, and a completion check all clear.

Illustrative example — nothing shown here is a real business, person or message.

What the team sees

Every recovery message tied to a consent record, a real checkout link, and a cap.

  • A recovery queue showing opt-in status, abandonment stage, and send count for every eligible checkout
  • Completion suppression applied automatically — a converted customer drops out of the queue
  • The frequency cap enforced per customer, configurable per workspace
  • The recovery link always the live Shopify checkout URL, never a substitute page
  • Link clicks and any order completed afterward, attributed back to the specific recovery message that sent it

What determines eligibility

Consent, timing, and completion are checked before a workspace's own settings apply.

  • No message queues for a customer without a recorded WhatsApp marketing opt-in
  • A workspace admin sets the inactivity delay and the frequency cap per customer
  • A workspace admin also sets the quiet-hours window a recovery message must respect
  • Cart webhooks cover Online Store carts; a custom storefront cart may not report the same events
  • WhatsApp never asks for card data — the recovery link always leads to the real Shopify checkout

What this does not do

Morasel never messages a shopper without a recorded WhatsApp marketing opt-in, and it never keeps sending after an order completes or outside the configured quiet-hours window. Cart webhooks cover Online Store carts, not every custom storefront, so some abandonments may not be visible to recover. Attribution records a click and a completed order in the same window — a correlation the team can see, not proof the message alone caused the sale.

Abandoned checkout recovery questions

Who receives an abandoned-checkout message?

Only a shopper with a recorded WhatsApp marketing opt-in. Anyone without one is never queued for a recovery message.

Where does the recovery link go?

Straight to the real Shopify checkout URL for that abandoned checkout — never a card-data form inside WhatsApp.

What happens if the customer already ordered?

The message is suppressed the moment a completed order exists for that customer, checked again right before send.

Can the same customer get reminded endlessly?

No. A frequency cap limits how many recovery messages one customer can receive, enforced per customer.

Does this cover every abandoned cart on my store?

Cart webhooks cover Online Store carts. A custom storefront cart may not report the same events, so coverage depends on how the store is built.

Does a recovery message ever send in the middle of the night?

No. A message that clears every other check still waits for the workspace's configured quiet-hours window to open before it sends.

How do you know a recovery message actually worked?

A link click and any order completed within the attribution window are recorded against that specific message — a correlation the team can see, not a guaranteed cause.

Is checkout recovery priced on the revenue it brings back?

No — there is no commission on what you recover. Abandoned checkout recovery runs on your Morasel subscription — Core $49, Pro $99, Max $199, Custom on request. WhatsApp usage is billed separately, per delivered message, from a prepaid wallet at the rates in our published rate card — based on Meta's official WhatsApp pricing by country and message type, plus a Morasel service fee.
